ON A SUMMER’S DAY

In the sweet scent of honeysuckle summer,
flies hatch on bayous,
mosquitoes whine. The males
drink nectar from daffodils;
the females seek birds to bite.
The smell of bream beds
cause cautious noses
to twitch. Bullfrogs hrump.
bass strike waiting hooks,
and deer watch
in successful sunlight
the irreducible day.
