Details:

William Bartram, America’s most famed naturalist, visited what is now Alabama in the summer and fall of 1775 during a four-year odyssey of discovery through the American South. The landscapes, plants, animals, and people he encountered were truly remarkable, and he was particularly impressed with what he found in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. In 1791 he published a book, commonly called Travels, that recounts his adventure. Through detailed descriptions and colorful prose, Bartram’s work opens a vibrant window into a world that may seem quite alien to us today, but one which you can glimpse if you’re looking in the right places!

During a two-hour cruise along the waters of the tranquil Tensaw River retracing a portion of Bartram’s route and in a short free presentation afterwards, Brian Rushing, a Bartram “enthusiast,” will introduce you to this colorful character. Along the way we’ll discover the wonderful things he saw and experienced while on his journey, and his incredible contributions to biology, history, and literature. Participants will come away with an appreciation for not only Bartram as a scientist and an artist, but of the landscapes and Indigenous People that once existed in what we now call “Alabama.”

It is believed it helps in improving health by lowering stress, cholesterol, and blood pressure, assists in managing a variety chronic conditions, and strengthens the immune system.

Optional group hike after class.

Our instructor, Annie Allen, is a certified Yoga/Qigong instructor who has been teaching people this practice

for over a dozen years. She teaches this technique for the Baldwin County High Football team and serves as a Business Education teacher for the school. She is also a Spanish Court interpreter.

Gaillard Island, which is man-made from dredge material from the Theodore Industrial Canal, is one of the largest pelican rookeries on the northern Gulf Coast. Named for Mobile dentist Dr. Wilson Gaillard who had the idea, it was created specifically for shorebirds to use for nesting. More than 20,000 pelicans use the island along with other shorebirds such as several species of terns, gulls, herons, egrets, and white Ibises, among others. Although the island is protected and not accessible by the public, birding is usually good around the perimeter where the adult birds are flying back and forth from the mainland.

This series of four classes will help those without significant experience in art to learn basic techniques applicable to a variety of mediums. By finding creative uses for small found or repurposed everyday objects—textiles, pottery, paper, metal, cups, plates, bottles and more—unique color and design can be incorporated into an original artistic creations. Our instructor will guide students in the processes by which uses for items are identified and sketches of concepts are made with an emphasis on fundamentals of color, line, texture, and dimension.

This program will be led by accomplished local artist Nancy Milford. Nancy is an experienced art instructor who has taught several art classes at the park and participated in several regional art exhibitions.
